5 out of 5 stars Where there's a will, this is a pretty good way   November 9, 2009

Previously, I downloaded a very basic DIY will from the Internet. I decided that this might be a better bet. Despite a great big box - all you receive is a CD. There is no instruction booklet. However, I didn't need one. I simply inserted the CD and followed the online prompts. Ignore the ad for greetings cards and go straight to the software.

There is information about will writing and inheritance tax. To be perfectly honest, I skimmed through this (I will, no doubt, go back over it later!) Even though I didn't study anything very closely, I found drafting my will to be very straightforward.

Once you choose which will you wish to fill in, it comes up as a PDF. On the right-hand side, there is an interactive panel which you fill in. Basically, you fill in your name, marital status, sex, name of beneficiaries etc and it pops up in the text of the will. It is as straightforward as that.

I did get slightly confused when entering details of residuary beneficiaries but there are little boxes which pop up and explain difficult words and the significance of the entries.

It really is quite straightforward. And it's pretty well thought out. Once you have filled in all the boxes, you can see the finished will and edit it if you wish. You then save it and can go back and edit it whenever you like.

To my mind, this has the great advantage of allowing you to fiddle about with your will to your heart's content without continually revisiting the solicitor.

I had a last will and testament printed out in less than an hour from opening the package so I was pretty pleased with it. As long as you follow the instructions to get it correctly witnessed, it appears that everything is perfectly legal.

If you haven't got time or don't wish to visit the solicitors, I think this is a sensible alternative to dying intestate. Recommended.

WHAT ARRIVED
A box about the size of a medium paperback book, inside just a CD - nothing else
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/Vista, Pentium 200MHz,64MB RAM (512MB for Vista), CD ROM drive, 50MB free hard disk space - NB it does not states anywhere on packaging compatible with MAC
INSTALLATION
When CD popped in usual licence agreement you have to accept appears then a box with various option `Start', `Online Help', 'Other Titles' etc - when you press start you have no option but to do online registration first which states ("In order to receive technical support from Avanquest, you must complete this form. Once submitted you will be entitled to receive technical support and information about product upgrades and promotions as they become available.") There are only two options for your title at the start of this form `Mr' or `Ms'???? the rest is the usual American boxes for address etc, when you continue another promotional box appears for Hallmark Greetings Card software ......grrrrr, when you ignore this and continue the internet connection is closed and installation screen appears - hallelujah. The installation takes approx ten seconds then an icon appears on your desktop and you are ready to begin the stages 1) will selection 2) will planner 3) create your will 4) what next 5) home.
WHAT I DID
I did a dummy will with fictional names etc just to see what happened at the end. All the steps were very clear throughout the creation of the will and I found it very easy to compile but, at the end when I came to save it I thought it would be saved on my system as a windows doc but an Avanquest Box came up and said the Will had to be saved/registered online to continue. I tried selecting 'all' and saving to a word document but it wouldn't let me. Although I was happy to fill in the Will Document I am not happy for personal details/finances of myself and those of my beneficiaries including their full name, addresses, childrens' names etc to be swimming around the internet, so for now I have deleted the dummy and will be doing nothing at present. If anybody knows different I would be very pleased to hear because creating the Will document itself was a doddle.

4 out of 5 stars Produces A Simple Will In Under 30 Minutes   January 21, 2010

Well it will for me as I am single with no children.

Program is easy to install and works okay on Windows 7.

The first steps you have to complete is decide how complex a will is required based on if you are married, have children or other complex issues.

Will the document hold up if taken to court if anyone disagrees with the document of course you will never know.

The program permits you to save your will (but I am not sure where it puts it, it does not appear in your documents folder) and of course it can be printed and then signed by your witnesses.

For me, with a simple family it does the trick but if I had children, a wife, etc I think a professional will drawn up by a lawyer would put ones mind more at rest.

4 out of 5 stars Simple software program for creating a basic will   December 17, 2009

A will is better than no will, right? Well of course - so for this reason alone I can highly recommend this software for anyone who often says to themselves, 'Oh yes, I really ought to do a will' but never seems to prioritise it or get around to making an appointment with the solicitor. I fall into that category.

There are no instructions at all with the CD - in fact just a single CD with a lot of cardboard packaging to bulk out the box. Just pop the CD into your CD drive and it should run automatically. The first dialogue box to come up on screen is for online registration which it says is necessary for upgrades and authentication etc. If you don't want to complete this (I didn't) just close the online registration screen and a second screen should pop up for registration at a later date. All you need to do here is just fill in your name and opt to complete registration at a later time. It would have been useful to have a simple start up guide included with the software package with this information.

After that the software is quite simple. There are options for a very simple will, a more comprehensive will or a Discretionary Trust will for married couples, or those in a civil partnership. The differences are explained. You will need to have financial information handy before you write your will, and have thought about matters such as guardianship, heirlooms, trusts, who you want to be your executors, charitable donations, provisions for pets etc. It is also recommended that in addition to completing your will you write a letter of wishes for your executors and explains the benefits of doing so. There are some quite useful guidance notes that go with the software in the form of Adobe pdf documents (Adobe reader can be downloaded from the internet if you don't already have it).Make use of the references and links suggested in the accompanying notes pages and be as thorough as you can.

Use the software to create a good introductory will (better than nothing), but there is of course no substitute for taking advice from your solicitor as well and having a will drawn up by a professional is to be recommended as the ultimate solution.

4 out of 5 stars Very easy and straightforward. Everyone should write a Will, so don't put it off   November 11, 2009

I have never written a Will before, and in fact have never even been to a solicitor. I had no idea what would be involved and actually, thinking about dying and what would happen afterwards made me feel a bit uneasy and anxious, which I am sure must be a reason a lot of people say 'I'll do it tomorrow'.

But what happens if you never get round to it and always put it off? I thought (like I am sure a lot of people do) that anything that was 'mine', whether it is money or property or savings or possessions etc, would go automatically to my fiance or my parents.

It was a suprise to find out that actually if you don't leave a Will, you might just as well leave all your possessions and money out in the street and let anyone who is passing help themselves to a bit of it! (Not to mention the Government who will take a huge chunk of it).

So this software was ideal as a place to start, to get my 'affairs in order' as they say. It loads straight onto the computer in about a minute and all you have to do is answer a series of easy questions and type in the names and addresses of the people or charities whom you want to receive certain things or percentage shares of your estate.

You will need to know the rough value of things like your savings, your car, your personal possessions and how much debt you have, such as the remaining amount on your mortgage or any money you owe on crdit cards. This is so the software can estimate the overall value of your estate.

The answers you give to the questions are put into a Will template that writes all the wording for you so all you need to do is read through it and make sure the names and amounts/percentages are all as you want them, then print a copy and get it bound by a stationery/printing company (Staples or other high street chains can do this for you).

I am really pleased that I finally did my Will. Although I am only young, it's important to do this and now I won't need to think about it again for a while and I can be certain that the things I have worked hard for over my life will actually go to the people I want them to. Thats the most important thing in the end, isn't it? :-)
